Firefighter Visit- 6.11.18

Our current topic is The Great Fire of London. We have been learning many facts about The Great Fire. We also had a visit from a local fire engine. We got a tour of the cab, looked at some of the special tools they use and got to use the hose! Have a look at what we got up too....

A visit from the Fire Fighters

The children in Year 1/2 had a lovely morning today, with a visit from the Lincoln Fire Brigade.  Four Fire officers came with a Fire Engine and spoke to the children all about what it's like to be a Fire Fighter Today.

Even Mrs Cotton dressed up in the protective clothes!!
They had a great time trying out the hoses and seeing how accurate they could make their water jets.

We all had a turn at sitting in the Fire Engine.

If only there was a fire service like we have today back in 1666, then the Great Fire of London might never have happened!

Great Fire of London

We have been learning about The Great Fire of London. On Tuesday we had a busy afternoon; painting 3D Tudor houses, using library books to find out information and we had a go at building Tudor houses out of Lego! We then learnt a memorable song to help us remember all of the facts!

Being Scientists

The children received a letter from Grace Darling this week asking if they could help her find the best material for her coat on the wet, windy Farne Islands. They decided what they would do to make it a fair test and carried out a simple investigation to find out which of the materials Grace had suggested would make the most suitable coat.
Although the children found that the tinfoil was waterproof they decided that it wouldn't be a suitable material for a waterproof jacket as it was too fragile and would break or tear easily.  Therefore they concluded that the thin plastic would make the most suitable material for Grace's coat.

We did have a surprise with the felt.......... at first it appeared to be waterproof as the water sat on top of it for over 20 minutes, but as predicted it eventually showed itself to be absorbant and soaked the water up.

Questions, Questions, Questions

The children had a wonderful afternoon becoming history detectives and trying to learn about what homes were like in the past by handling artefacts and asking questions.

The Prop Box from the Museum of Lincolnshire life had a great collection of artefacts to get the children's ideas and imaginations going. Here are just a few pictures of the children handling the artefacts.

Autumn walk

Today we went on an Autumn walk around the school field! We found lots of beautiful autumn leaves and enjoyed talking about all the changing colours.

When we got back to the classroom we explored colour mixing in our sketchbooks using autumnal colours and we even made tiny snails using the conkers we had collected on our walk!

Before hometime we learnt the song "cauliflowers fluffy" to round off a perfect autumn afternoon.

Well done everyone!

Learning to learn

During the first few weeks of term we spent a lot of time getting to know each other and learning how we learn.  The children revisited the learning characters and had fun learning to how to be Curious Cats, Teamwork Toucans, Memorable Meerkats, Proud Peacocks, Have a Go Hippos and Resilient Rhinos !!!

Learning about the past

The children have been enjoying learning about Grace Darling this week, how she was able to help her dad to save lots of people in a rowing boat.  During PPA time they have followed instructions to make their own paper boats and had great fun seeing how many passengers the boats could safely hold.
