Numicon maths

Using numicon for number bonds

Over the past 2 weeks we have been exploring using Numicon equipment  to identify patterns of number bonds to 10 and then to 20.

We have also used it to identify place value in 2 digit numbers .

Finding fractions

In Numeracy we have been finding fractions of amounts.
We found 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5 with no problems!

However, when we were trying to find 2/3, 2/4, 3/5, etc we needed a little more help!

We got ourselves into groups. 1 person was the whole number and then, because we finding thirds, we shared the whole number by 3. We then knew that 1/3 of 27 was 9.

We then put 2 of the thirds together (to find 2/3). We recognised that we needed to add 1/3 (worth 9) to another 1/3 (worth 9). We could then work out that 2/3 of 27 was 9 + 9.

As you can see, we quickly caught on and then applied our knowledge to quarters and fifths.

Well done everyone - Fabulous Fraction Finders!

Improving our computer skills

The children in Year 1 have been impressing the staff with their fantastic ICT skills.  Not only can they log on and off, open and close programs and shut down computers independently, they proved that they were super typists too.  They played 2Pop and Falling words and many of the highest scores were over 50........with 72 being the highest score of the day !!

How Many People Can Your Boat Hold?

This term, we have continued our topic of "Terrific Time Travellers" and in Science, we have looked at floating and sinking.  After reading a factual account of the Titanic sinking, we made a ship out of plasticine and put people (dried peas) in it, to see how many it would hold, before sinking.  Our record was forty-nine and we became fiercely competitive.  Do you think you can beat that?!!?
