Floating and Sinking
We have been learning about the Titanic.
We designed a boat with plasticene and attempted to make it float. There was lots of sinking but we did have some successes too!
The class champion was Rosie with 51 people! Well done!

Estimating!
Today we have been learning how to estimate a set of objects and count to check how many there are.
We looked at a group of items and had a clever guess at how many we thought there were.
We wrote down our ideas as a group and then counted to see who was the closest.
As we were counting large numbers we put our items into groups of 10's and to help us to count more accurately.

Making boats!
We have been learning about the Titanic.
The Year One children had great fun trying to design a boat that would hold the most passengers.
The winning boat held 6 passengers ...... not quite as many as the Titanic but still very impressive.

Grace Darling Drama
Grace Darling
We spent the afternoon listening to a radio broadcast telling the story of Grace Darling.
We heard about her early life and the lead up to her daring rescue in 1838.
We pretended to be Grace growing up, exploring the area around Longstone Lighthouse, Northumberland.
Being warned to be careful on the rowing boat while exploring the islands around the lighthouse |
Pleading with her father to go and rescue the men at sea |
Next week's lesson will involve the actual rescue, so check out the blog again to see our acting skills.

We have investigated materials to find a waterproof coat for Grace Darling.
Using different materials we enjoyed exploring the effects water had on them. We discussed what we needed to keep the experiment fair. At the end of the experiment, we decided plastic would be the best material to make the coat from as it is waterproof, flexible and strong!
We tested water onto each material and recorded the results. |
We carefully measured 1 ml of water each time to keep the test fair. |
We discussed our findings as we went along. |
We took turns to record and explore. |
Sorting
The Year 1's have been learning about 2D shape properties. They have been sorting the shapes into a Venn Diagram.

Tessellation
Tessellation
This week we have been exploring tessellation.
A Tessellation is when we cover a surface with a pattern of flat shapes so that there are no overlaps or gaps.
We made regular tessellations with regular polygons.
We then made semi-regular tessellations using 2 or more regular polygons.
We then used carpet tiles and 2D shapes to create our own tessellating patterns.
